New Year New Start. What to do to guarantee results in 2024.

  • Update: 14/12/2023

January 1st marks the start of a new year and many people choose this as a great time to start a new project. It could be a renovation at home, a new career, take up a new hobby, or a fitness programme.

It just seems like the ideal time to get something new started. With the whole year stretching out in front of you, you have 12 months to complete the challenge and get the goal achieved. And it really is a great time to start something new, the whole year ahead and the opportunity to achieve the goal in the next 365 days, although 2024 is a leap year so you do have one more day.

Whatever it is you choose to make your new year's resolution, it’s always a good idea to get the support or advice of someone who has knowledge of the goal you are working towards. I would highly recommend you don't start taking walls down at home without first consulting an expert in this area.

The most common thing people start in the New Year is a healthier lifestyle change.

It might be a focus on detoxing from the over indulgences of the festive season with a dry January challenge, a change of diet to improve health, or joining a gym to work off that extra helping of roast potatoes. Whatever the reason for the lifestyle change, it’s important that you have the right support in order for the goal to be achieved. Make a pact with friends, join a class with like minded people or get on board with a coach to make sure you are kept accountable to continue, and see the plan through to completion.

For many people starting a new journey in the new year, the going will be good to start with, feeling excited for what the year will bring and the prospect of some really great results on the horizon, means that motivation is at an all time high in the first few weeks. But motivation doesn’t last forever, and after the first couple of weeks staying on the plan might be more of a struggle and finding reasons not to ‘do the work’ can start to creep in more often as January starts to come to an end. Ask anyone who trains at a gym regularly, and they’ll tell you, the first few weeks they are overrun with new members, but as the month wears on the numbers start to drop.

Motivation to make a change isn’t permanent, and after a while the motivation has to turn to dedication. You have to be dedicated to getting to the sessions, making healthy meals and putting in the work to achieve the goals. Staying dedicated can be hard, but having a support system around you to keep you accountable, and go to for help and advice means a higher likelihood of adherence to the goal and better results all round. It really does take a village.

Some people are quite happy to charge on solo, but for the vast majority, strength in numbers is the winning formula.

At Body Shape Fitness in Ely, there is a dedicated team of trainers and support to make sure whatever the goal is you always succeed. Personal trainer run sessions, a support group, nutrition advice and buzz of the group sessions makes a winning combination for really getting that new years goal achieved. Sessions and exercises are adapted to suit your needs, whilst still pushing you to give 100% in a safe and controlled way, and wherever you are on your fitness journey, you will be made to feel welcome and supported in every area of the programme.

So if you are looking to make some changes towards a healthier lifestyle in 2024, getting signed up to a team or a coach is really the best thing you can do for you and the results you are looking to achieve.
